LETTERING BASICS FOR JOURNALING WORKSHOP

Class Date: Saturday, July 11th

Class Time: 12pm–3pm

This beginner-friendly workshop will introduce you to basic letterform construction. Starting with foundational hand calligraphy, designer and author of Let's Make Letters!, Kelcey Gray will over step-by-step instructions to re-enchant your lettering. Tool tips and serif secrets await!

After learning to sketch the basics, you will learn to draw a variety of non-script letters (we love cursive, but that's another workshop) using calligraphy markers, pens and other mark-making tools.

Lettering can enliven, create hierarchy and give structure to a journaled page - and it's fun! Join us and build the creative confidence you need to start drawing letters in your own journal or planner.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own journal or planner.

Each workshop ticket includes:

  • 3 hours of hands on instruction from a talented designer, author and professor

  • Signed copy of Let's Make Letters!

  • Custom-designed lettering worksheets

  • Papermate Sharpwriter pencil, ZIG calligraphy marker and pentel sign pen

  • Snack bento box + treats

  • Beverages (sparkling water and sparkling wine)

  • 10% off retail purchase the day of the workshop

                          MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR: KELCEY GRAY

Kelcey is an Austin, Texas–based graphic designer who spends her time working with words and exploring the possibilities of typography and lettering. She is the author of Let’s Make Letters! and currently teaches design and typography classes full-time in the Department of Design at the University of Texas at Austin.

Kelcey received her MFA in Graphic Design from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. Throughout her career, she has won several industry awards and been featured in publications like Fast Co., Communication Arts, Under Consideration, Gestalten Books, and "Type on Screen" edited by Ellen Lupton. She has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally, notably at Type Hike, the Society of Typographic Arts 100, and London Design Festival.

She was once told she was "energetic, but not in that annoying way" by someone who clearly meant well but was not very good at giving compliments.
